DMV Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to take all tests if my non-commercial driver’s license expires?
Customers whose non-commercial driver’s license has been expired for more than 90 days are required to take the written knowledge exam. If your non-commercial driver's license has been expired for more than 180 days or if you have 6 or more points on your driver's record, you will be required to take the road test. If, however, it is determined that you possess no traffic violations (points) on your driving record for the last 2 years and your non-commercial driver's license has not been expired for more than 180 days, the road test will be waived. Note the requirements for renewing a expired commercial driver’s license are different.
How long do I have to renew my license with no penalty?
DMV has no penalty for late license renewal. You will be ticketed and/or arrested by the police if you are pulled over while driving with an expired license.
Is there a late fee for failure to renew my vehicle registration?
There is no late fee for vehicle registration. There is a late fee of $20 for
each 30-day period or portion thereof that a vehicle is late for inspection.
If your vehicle does not pass the initial inspection, there will be a re-inspection
late fee if you do not get the vehicle successfully re-inspected
during the allotted 20 days on the inspection sticker.
I heard that I can do other non-related DMV functions when I visit DMV. What are these functions?
When obtaining or renewing a driver's license or identification card, you may also register to become an organ and tissue donor, register for selective service and to register to vote.
