Obtain a DC Commercial Driver's License

How do I get a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for the first time?

Note: Applicants must first have a valid non-commercial driver's license

The Patriot Act, Public Law 108-458, National Intelligence Reform Act of 2004 does NOT allow for social security numbers to be displayed on driver licenses or identification cards.

Obtain a Commercial Learner's Permit

  1. Visit 1205 Brentwood Road NE to obtain a DC Commercial Driver's License Manual to study for the knowledge test. You may also download a DC CDL Manual* online.
  2. Take a CDL knowledge test(s) for the desired permit class and endorsements at 1205 Brentwood Road NE. The CDL knowledge test will be valid for 90 days after passing.
  3. Have a physician complete a US Department of Transportation Medical Form and Card.
  4. Complete the Driver's License/Voter Registration Application* at the DMV
  5. Pay applicable fees.
  6. Obtain a Commercial Driver's License Learner's Permit. The CDL Learner's Permit authorizes the driver to operate a designated class of vehicles if accompanied by a driver licensed to operate such vehicles.

Obtain a Commercial Driver's License

  1. Schedule a CDL road test by calling 311 or (202) 737-4404, 8:15 am to 4 pm Monday- Friday. The road test is given at designated DMV service locations with test times starting between 7:30 am and 2:10 pm Monday-Friday. You must be accompanied to the road test by a driver with a valid CDL of the same class or higher. Please bring the following to your appointment:
  2. Take a CDL skills road test(s) for the desired permit class and endorsements at 2390 South Capitol Street, SE.
  3. Upon successful completion of the road test, apply to upgrade to a CDL at the DMV CDL office located at 1205 Brentwood Road NE.
  4. Pay applicable fees.
