If your provisional driver's license expires before you are able
to move to the full driver's license with conditions stage, you
may renew your provisional driver's license within ninety (90) days
of expiration. The DMV makes provisional driver's license renewal
convenient by offering renewal services at DMV service
locations and online.
If you're temporarily more than 200 miles beyond the District of
Columbia border you may qualify for absentee
provisional driver's license renewal of your DC provisional
driver's license.
If your Provisional license is expired for more than ninety (90)
days but less than 180 days and you have been free of traffic
violation points and GRAD program violations for 12 consecutive months,
you will be required to take and pass the knowledge
test, submit your 10 hour night driving certification of eligibility
form and will be issued your full license with conditions. If your
Provisional license is expired for more than 180 days , you will
be required to take and pass the knowledge
test and road skills test,
submit your 10 hour night driving certification of eligibility form
and will be issued your full license with conditions (no 6 months
permit holding period is required as long as you have been free of traffic
violation points and GRAD program violations for 12 consecutive
months). An individual must renew their license upon expiration
and may not operate a vehicle on an expired license.
