You will receive a renewal notice 60 days in advance of the expiration of your vehicle registration. You will receive your renewal notice by e-mail if you have provided DMV with your e-mail address. For last minute online renewals, DMV provides a temporary vehicle registration certificate that can be used for up to 45 days, until your registration sticker is received in the mail.

registration via one of the following convenient options. As of July 13, 2009, in-person registration renewals were eliminated.
A valid DC vehicle inspection is required to renew vehicle registration.
Note: If an individual is changing address during vehicle registration renewal, he/she must do so in person and present a valid proof of residency document.
