On behalf of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), which regulates parking in the District, DMV issues disability parking placards and permits.
The Application
for Disability Parking Placard or Tags* (used for temporary
and long-term placards) and the
One-Week Temporary Disability Parking Permit Application* (used
for one-week permits) are available at any DMV
service center location and on this website.
The application includes a portion that must be completed by your
physician if you are applying for a temporary or long-term disability
placard, except as otherwise indicated on the form. There is no
physician certification required for the one-week permit. The application
may be mailed to DC DMV, Medical Review Services, PO Box 90120,
Washington, DC 20090, faxed to (202) 673-9908 or brought to any
DMV service center location.
If your request is approved, you may be issued either a one-week
permit (no physician’s signature required), a
temporary placard (up to five years) or a long-term
placard (five years to coincide with the expiration of your
driver’s license or identification card). By law, one placard and
one set of vehicle tags may be issued for each applicant that is
a DC resident.
There is no charge for a disability placard or permit. If you
mailed or faxed in your application, DMV will mail the parking placard
or permit to you. If you prefer to process your application in person,
you may visit any DMV service center location. You may also send
someone in your place, provided they bring a copy of your driver's
license or identification card. Disabled parking placards must be
displayed and readable from the front windshield.
